major security risk!!!

Google has been naughty. They have kept every email that a gmail user has sent or recieved (the mail still got sent).
They have also been keeping the gmail users details. All of the emails and info have been kept on one helluva server. This is just to warn you.

Jafo,
Normally i think you are brilliant but a tad off target. This round tho I have to say I'm very suprised at your laser like insight. I must say your pontification snagged my interest and my respect. If only we had more thinkers such as your self...the world might be a safer and more peaceful world.

Good on ya.

More than one response in this thread has been along the lines of:
"If you don't have something to hide, what are you worried about?"

This argument completely misses the point. Now, I don't have a problem with GMail or its policy. What I disagree with is the idea that desiring privacy = up to no good.

First, there are completely legitimate business reasons a person might desire privacy. Perhaps your company is planning a big merger/takeover or something. I don't know from business and stuff, but I think the example is clear that there are plenty of times a person wouldn't want their email read when they aren't doing anything wrong.

Secondly, a right to privacy is a basic human right granted to every citizen in civilized countries (some might say that such a right is yours whether or not your local government recognizes the fact). Enjoying the dignity and respect afforded to you simply by being a member of the human race should not give intelligent people the impression that you are up to some nefarious shenanigans.

This "If you're not hiding drugs in your closet, then you won't mind if I search it" argument is immature and irresponsible. I find it's usually made by the same folks who find it unpatriotic when a citizen exercises other rights, such as free speech or civil dissent.

But, as far as email (and other internet transactions) is concerned, netizens usually just don't realize they have so little privacy. This is because, as human beings, they assume they have privacy, not vice versa.

There is always encyption (which I have more faith in than another poster had). But most people find it isn't worth the extra effort, although they don't conciously realize they are giving up one of their rights. Another problem with encryption is as above -some nitwits think that because you don't want just anyone reading your communication, that means you're probably communicating concerning something evil. But, realize, every credit-card transaction, every forum password you create, that all uses encryption and is an attempt to exercise your right to privacy.

Does that mean you have something to hide?

Sorry so long.

I agree!

Hey I use GMail now and again and it's not too shabby. But in my honest opinion it hits the mark in only a few places, and is still no true threat to the global Free Email.

Try out www.MyAereus.com. They ROCK! It's also a beta project, but not only do you get that wonderful (and oh my god.. PRIVATE) 1gb of space, but it simply knocks Hotmail and Yahoo on their asses. Gmails hottest feature is their ability to sort through your messages in a Thread View. The thing is I havn't found another free web-based email app that does this.. or at least well, other than myaereus. It really combines the best of both Forum and Email systems and I LOVE their search capabilities. If you do try it out send some feedback their way. I have been beta testing it for less than a month now, but Ive pretty much made the switch from GMail to MyAereus.

On a side note. This is a CAPITALIST society. We, as Americans, Capitalize upon any and all ideas. If you don't like the water get out of the freaking pool man.

What exactly do you have to worry about anyway? Unless you're writing letters to the gihad about how you're gonna assasinate the president (Not like i care if you do), I think you're just fine.

I'm sorry about saying bad things about gmail, anyway, i just love it.

I only have one thing to add, if you are really worried about particular emails, encrypt them or use a second service (where you are also poked, plotted and sold...).

Either way, I am using gmail for my basic stuff and another service for my work/business items.

If the Gmen read my emails . . . boy would they have a good laugh.
And possibly a heart attack.
And the Gwomen would probably all turn lesbian.
(Really, my friend and I are working on a 'literature project'. You don't want to know.)
Anyways, I don't really care if Google reads my emails or not, probably the main reason they're archiving emails is because of this ever-growing pedophile problem . . .
I don't blame them. I wouldn't want all proof to be lost if some 60-year-old lunatic chased after me . . . ugh.
But, now there are probably job openings at Google, 'Email Reader'. Now wouldn't that be fun?
I didn't think so either.

All email places keep a copy of the client emails, if for no other reason then for backup reasons.
filters scan the emails for key words and phrases, so in essence, it is "reading" your email. ALL filters, for ALL email providers. Remember when the (US) goverment did that thing where it made it so that they could filter emails and determine about terrorists?

Point of fact is this, Someone, Somewhere, knows Exactly what your doing, YES there is a Big Brother. Get over yourself, and reast assures that Google is NOT Big Brother.

The Goverments and Military are.
